Maryam Alavi

Maryam Alavi is the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and Director of Knowledge at Emory University's Goizueta Business School. She holds a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems and has 20 years of experience in higher education and information systems industry.  She has also served in administrative position as the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and Research at Goizueta Business School and the Chairperson of the Information Systems Department at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland from 1993-1998. Her industry experience includes planning, design, and evaluation of information systems for various application areas in private and public organizations, and managing a private-firm research department with local and overseas staff members.

Alavi is an associate editor of Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, and Journal of Strategic Information Systems.  She served as an associate editor of MIS Quarterly from 1987 to 1990, Data Base from 1990 to 1993, and Information and Management from 1995 to 1997. Alavi was the program chair for the 1990 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) and the chair of the 1995 ICIS/Ernest & Young Doctoral Consortium. She is the 1995 and the 1998 elected Vice President of Education for the Association for Information Systems (AIS). Alavi was awarded the distinguished Marvin Bower Faculty Fellowship at Harvard Business School in 1996-1997, and was elected as an AIS (Association for Information Systems) Fellow in 2000. She has served as a consultant to a variety of organizations including the World Bank, KPMG Peat Marwick, LLP, Lotus/IBM, Lucent Technologies, Marriott Corporation, the General Accounting Office, the American College of Physicians, and the Aspen Institute.
