NASCIO Honors Nikhil Deshpande with Technology Innovator Award
GTA’s Nikhil Deshpande was honored with a State Technology Innovator award on October 15 at the annual conference of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO).
The award is presented each year by NASCIO to honor outstanding state government employees who have advanced technology policy by promoting best practices, adopting new technologies, and advancing service delivery.
As Chief Digital Officer of Digital Services Georgia, Mr. Deshpande leads the team responsible for managing Georgia.gov, the official online portal to Georgia state government, and Georgia GovHub, the state’s official publishing platform for delivering state-of-the-art, secure, accessible, and compliant websites. His team’s many design and technical innovations have resulted in a robust platform with a mobile-first approach for supporting current and future online services. GovHub hosts 83 state websites.
Within the past year, Digital Services Georgia began a rebranding initiative focused on building a design system and bringing consistency to state websites, web applications, and other digital platforms. He and his team partnered with IDEO, a global design company, to create a style guide; a set of rules for design implementation and editorial guidelines; a pattern library consisting of templates, modules, components, and elements; and ready-to-implement color palettes, typography, grids, and visual assets.
Mr. Deshpande has focused much of his team’s attention on adapting digital platforms to the growing use of mobile devices and ensuring accessibility for people with a range of disabilities affecting vision, hearing, motion, and cognition.
Mr. Deshpande was one of three people honored with technology innovator awards. The other recipients were Tony Powell, CIO for the state of Florida’s Department of Health, and Tere Shade, business solutions manager for the state of Texas.
