Backup and recovery RUs differ in the GETS legacy and transformed environments.

Legacy Backup

The GETS legacy backup environment has four possible RUs:

Legacy Backup and Recovery RUs

Application/Utility Tapes in Storage (Virtual Tape Storage)

Three possible legacy backup and recovery billing combinations may appear on the agency’s invoice as shown below:

Option 3, the Extended Backup in the legacy environment, occurs only when the agency has so much data that the information cannot be backed up in an allotted time. In those cases, data are moved first to virtual tapes and then transferred to actual tapes. Agencies that incur these costs may be able to reduce the amount of data stored by implementing the suggestions found in Agency Best Practices to Manage Storage Consumption of this document.

Transformed Backup

The GETS transformed backup and recovery environment has several advantages over legacy:

  • Data restored from archives are platform independent.
  • A formal process for tape transport and retrieval has been developed.
  • Backup and recovery services are managed across the enterprise by IBM, a GETS server provider partner.

Additionally, the transformed backup and recovery RUs have been simplified:
